There are many reasons why a corporation might take the plunge into open source technologies. For those that do, the rewards can be tremendous!

Open source technologies have advanced greatly in recent years - visions of programmers and hackers huddled together in dark smoke-filled rooms couldn't be further from the truth. These days open source technologies enjoy broad community support; and greater control over the types of technology deployed. Collaboration between developers typically span the world, with the likes of highly sophisticated archival and deployment platforms that also feature social networking aspects, which encourage and spur the like-minded on. (github and sourceforge are perfect examples)
